When Cochlear Implant Outcomes Are Guarded: Developing Listening and Spoken Language Skills in Children

 

This talk reviews factors that affect a child's ability to use a cochlear implant to develop listening and spoken language skills. It addresses those children who present with multiple challenges for developing these skills. Goals and expectations are discussed along with therapy strategies.

Course Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to list at least five factors that affect a child's ability to use a cochlear implant to develop listening and spoken language skills.
  • Participants will be able to identify three auditory goals that are appropriate to focus on for a "challenged" child.
  • Participants will be able to describe at least one appropriate expectation in the area of audition, speech production, and expressive language for a "challenged" child.
