Clinic-to-Clinic Tip

A Cochlear implant clinic in Chicago has submitted this tip:

For patients who are sensitive to the onset of sound first thing in the morning (especially kids), we create an “Early Morning Program” for one of their program slots.  The “Early Morning Program” has a much larger volume range than normal, and allows a recipient to gradually increase the sound volume first thing in the morning.

Instructions:

In the Parameters Advanced screen in Custom Sound, change the “Percent Volume Adjust” from the default of 20 up to 50, 60 or 70 for the “Early Morning MAP”.  Instruct the recipient to turn the volume down to zero prior to putting the processor on in the morning.  Then gradually increase the volume as the recipient adjusts to the first sounds of the morning.  The rest of their programs have the default percent volume adjust.  Many of our patients really like this to get a gentle start in the morning.
