Many adults with progressive hearing loss have not used a voice telephone in a long time and may become accustomed to using captions for phone usage. Teenagers—whether or not they have a hearing loss—use text messaging as their primary method of exchanging information with friends and family members. This course will provide a hands-on review of wireless telephones from the perspective of usability by the hearing impaired listener.

This session is the first in a series that deconstructs the auditory skills hierarchy and takes each level of auditory function in turn to build a complete understanding of auditory skill development. The base levels of auditory awareness, discrimination and patterning are examined here. Specific treatment techniques for maximizing progress through these particular levels will be discussed with ideas for targeting these skills in all situational contexts.

Music appreciation training for cochlear implant users is a relatively new rehabilitation focus. Recent experience has shown that specific practice techniques as well as listening to particular kinds of music can be helpful in improving perception and enjoyment of music. Research has shown that structured practice may be helpful to cochlear implant users. This seminar will review strategies that help music enjoyment for adults and older children, and introduce a music rehabilitation program that was developed specifically for cochlear implant and hearing aid users.

This presentation identifies some of the issues involved in encouraging the development of auditory skills in classroom settings. A closer look at instructional time, classroom grouping and curricular demands will set the stage for practical suggestions for maximizing a child's opportunity to use the cochlear implant for auditory learning. Listening and spoken language strategies will be reviewed in the context of utilizing them for teaching content.

Our goal in educating students who are deaf and hard of hearing is to provide an environment and supports that enable them to be successful learners. How can we set students up to effectively benefit from their education? How do we meet individual student needs rather than making do with “available” services. This presentation will address the variety of students with hearing loss in our schools from those on IEPs to 504s to no services at all.

Children are born with the capacity to learn music and language. This course will discuss the benefits of music for the young child using hearing technology. It will review models for aural rehabilitation as well as goals and objectives within a music therapy session. Additionally, strategies for creating music interventions and incorporating activities into daily life will be explored.

The purpose of this course is to provide cochlear implant recipients and professionals with an understanding of the procedures performed by the audiologist during programming appointments. The various procedures performed during mapping sessions will be described, and the rationale for each procedure will be explained. Attendees will be given helpful hints for how to prepare for the appointment, and will also receive information regarding improving communication with their audiologist before, during and after the appointment.

The purpose of this presentation is to demonstrate that children with significant hearing loss can be bilingual, regardless of their educational landscape and how bilingual issues are integral to the audiologic management of the child. The course reviews considerations that need to be made by audiologists and other interventionists when working with families of these hearing impaired children when the home language is a language other than the majority language.

It is widely accepted that any child receiving a cochlear implant must receive subsequent aural rehabilitation services in order to experience maximal benefit from the implant device. The same holds true for most adult recipients, however, more often than not, rehabilitation services are hard for them to find. Speech language pathologists and audiologists who have trained to work with children may be reluctant to apply their skills in auditory development to adult clients.

This talk will review factors that affect a child's ability to use a cochlear implant to develop listening and spoken language skills. It will then address those children who present with multiple challenges for developing these skills. Goals and expectations will be discussed along with therapy strategies.

Parents of children with cochlear implants and the professionals that work with them are always looking for creative ways to incorporate auditory and language goals into fun activities. As the weather warms up, parents and professionals have a prime opportunity to expand their horizons by taking “therapy” out of doors. Working outside affords a unique opportunity to practice listening in noise and in a less structured setting, and to address auditory and language development goals in a new context.

The importance of parents’ participation in the intervention process of their child who is deaf or hard of hearing has been well documented. To provide families with increased opportunities to practice auditory-teaching strategies Hearts for Hearing developed Listening for Littles, a parent toddler group. The families’ participation in the parent toddler group has provided a better understanding of auditory teaching strategies and their use during small listening and language learning groups.

Education and other laws that support access are intended to allow children and adults with disabilities to attend school, live and work in the mainstream of society with full communication access and other services to support their needs. This seminar will examine and explain a range of federal laws from a philosophical and practical perspective to help parents, adults and teens with hearing loss, as well as professionals who serve all of these groups, to better understand how to be effective advocates.

The ability to understand and talk about ones' own feelings and thoughts as well as the emotions and ideas of others is referred to as social cognition. It can be thought of as our intuition about the world. Social cognition is useful to children and adults because it allows us to empathize, understand what motivates people, and navigate the social world. It also helps children understand stories, make inferences, and appreciate jokes. Children with profound hearing loss often experience delays in their ability to talk about their feelings, emotions, opinions, thoughts and ideas.

For children with cochlear implants, regular assessments perform the dual function of setting baseline performance and recording progress over time. This session aims to look at necessary components of a comprehensive speech and language evaluation and critical analysis of tests scores. Recommendations for the type of evaluation tools that might be more appropriate in educational settings and that may more directly inform habilitation will also be provided. Particular emphasis will be made on school aged populations.

This talk will discuss goals to focus on to develop more sophisticated listening, speech and language skills in teenagers. Specific activities that go along with each goal will be presented. Working with teenager's who have received a bilateral cochlear implant will also be reviewed.

Ideally these personnel work together as a team to help the child achieve maximal performance in the classroom; however, challenges await. Just as it is for children, rehabilitation for adults is critical to achieve one’s personal best with a cochlear implant. Auditory training can help improve outcomes in various situations including listening in quiet, using the telephone, enjoying music, and understanding speech in noise. Sound and WAY Beyond is a computer assisted speech training software package that can be used at home by adults and teens to practice their auditory skills.

Classrooms and other educational spaces are among the least friendly listening environments for children with cochlear implants. Use of assistive technology such as sound field and personal FM systems can be compromised by noise and reverberation in structured classroom settings. Also, one-on-one and small group interactions are also impeded. This presentation provides practical rationale for the benefits of appropriate acoustical environments and provides specific guidance for professionals and parents seeking improved acoustics.

Communication strategies are an important tool in the life of a cochlear implant recipient. While many people with hearing loss display a passive communication style with ineffective strategies, CI users can learn to be assertive, ask for what they need, and get it, thereby making conversation smoother, more accurate, and less frustrating, for both recipient and speaker.

The first in a two part series, this program will explore the process of lesson planning as it applies to the overall success of any intervention plan designed for a child with a cochlear implant. Professionals in both classroom and individual service provision settings will consider a series of questions that will assist them in accurately targeting specific learning objectives within formal activities.

Neurological maturation and neural plasticity of the auditory system will be discussed. This class will provide information for parents that will assist them in maximizing the outcomes their child receives from their speech processor mapping appointments. The class will include a description of the procedures involved in speech processor mapping, a description of the various techniques used to map children and adults, and helpful hints for maximizing performance with the cochlear implant.

Children who experience early success with their cochlear implants often find themselves in regular education settings for their school aged years. Other children utilizing implants have no alternative but to receive services through a public school cooperative. Itinerant teachers of children who are deaf are called upon to support all students in the mainstream but the diversity of individual profiles makes it difficult to find a “formula” for service delivery.

Students with cochlear implants attending elementary school programs face a dual challenge: acquire, refine or maintain auditory skills while at the same time learn new academic content. The rigors of classroom learning cannot overshadow the need to continue focus on advancing auditory competence and vice versa.

This one hour presentation is designed to discuss Mixed Hearing loss in children and what are the possible treatment options for the management of hearing loss in this population.

Parents and professionals recognize that the absence of the school routine brings the possibility of a slowdown in auditory and language skill development and begin to consider the need for particular strategies to continue language and auditory skill development in other ways. This session will suggest ideas for building structure into vacation while capitalizing on the carefree hours that summer brings.

This course is designed to provide school personnel with a basic understanding of the measurements that are obtained when programming a child's cochlear implant. It also provides participants with guideline to help determine when a child should return to the center for reprogramming.

As the academic year draws to a close, school-based professionals find themselves writing progress reports and making recommendations for continued skill development for the next school year. This online seminar will outline guidelines for writing progress reports that give a clear description of current skill level and describe the activities that will assist the professional in writing such reports. Specific recommendations for identifying IEP objectives in the domains of audition, language development and speech production will also be covered.

This class will consider factors that influence student performance and success with specific reference to cochlear implantation. Factors include identifying an appropriate classroom setting, communication between the implant center and school, supports and resources for school personnel and accountability measures to monitor performance. Participants will receive the protocols discussed in the class for their use.
