    Professionals working in schools for deaf children are faced with unique challenges in providing services to children with cochlear implants. Resistance to aggressive auditory management and attitudes of indifference to spoken language create barriers to helping a child maximize the auditory potential of the device.

  • Cochlear Implantation in Children with Multiple Issues: A Case Study Approach

    This class is a discussion of cochlear implantation in children with multiple issues. Three case studies highlight a variety of challenges associated with treatment in this population. Both audiological and speech/language aspects of care are presented to demonstrate their collaborative efforts with other specialties.

  • CLIC IT! Creating Listeners in the Classroom: Ideas for Teaching

    This presentation identifies some of the issues involved in encouraging the development of auditory skills in classroom settings. A closer look at instructional time, classroom grouping and curricular demands will set the stage for practical suggestions for maximizing a child’s opportunity to use the cochlear implant for auditory learning.

  • Clear Speech: Applying Research Findings to the Classroom

    In this class, I will introduce a conceptual framework for understanding sources of variability in speech intelligibility. We will then explore current research findings regarding the effectiveness of clear speech as a strategy for enhancing speech intelligibility for a variety of listener populations. Next, I will describe the acoustic-phonetic features of clear speech.

  • Captioning and Note Taking: How Does That Work?

    Captioning is an increasingly important communication access option in educational, entertainment, cultural, sports, and other venues for students and people of all ages. Advances and options in captioning technology as well as increases in the numbers of captioning personnel have made captioning more readily available.

  • Benchmarks of Performance for Children with Cochlear Implants

    This presentation describes general guidelines that may be used to set performance expectations for children receiving cochlear implants. Rationale for adapting these general benchmarks to individual implant users will be discussed. Case Examples will reinforce the principles described.

  • Baha in Young Children: Research and Clinical Considerations for Early Intervention Professionals

    This presentation will describe the bone conduction hearing pathway and will discuss the various types of hearing loss where bone conduction amplification would be appropriate. A description of the Baha System will be presented along with pediatric case studies.

  • Back to School with Cochlear Implants: The Top 10 Things Parents Need to Know

    With the majority of children with cochlear implants now attending school in public or private mainstream classrooms, parents should be prepared to aid school personnel in understanding and addressing their child’s needs. This course will review key topics that can help achieve a favorable classroom environment as well as guidance for the classroom teacher.

  • Auditory-Based Therapy when the Home Language is Not English

    This course will present some realities of the languages spoken at home as well as whether and how clinicians should support the minority language. Some terminology involved in bilingualism and the processes by which English-only clinicians can support bilingualism among children with hearing impairment are also discussed.

  • Auditory Verbal Approach: How Does it Apply to Me?

    This course delves into the Auditory-Verbal approach and Auditory-Verbal techniques. A-V techniques are discussed as they may be applied to children with cochlear implants who have varying backgrounds, supports, and communication methodologies. Unique needs and individualized outcomes for children are explored.

  • Auditory Therapy for Young Children: Parent and Professional Partnership

    This talk will discuss the role of parents in the decision-making process when determining mode of communication and educational services when a child has been diagnosed with a significant hearing loss. It will also review the parent-professional partnership with particular respect to the therapy process.

  • Auditory Skills: A Closer Look

    This intermediate level course reviews one auditory skills hierarchy and then explores the subskills of auditory function that must be achieved for communicative competence. Specific treatment techniques for maximizing progress will be discussed. Case examples then provide the opportunity to explore activities appropriate for targeting these specific auditory goals.

  • Auditory Neuropathy and Cochlear Implantation in Children

    The diagnosis of Auditory Neuropathy/Dys-synchrony in a child with a sensorineural hearing loss will quickly raise the possibility of cochlear implantation in some of these children. Our experience to date has resulted in providing cochlear implants to 35 children with this diagnosis. This presentation will review our diagnostic procedures, medical/surgical considerations and the outcomes that we have documented in this population of pediatric patients.

  • Auditory Learning and Cochlear Implantation for the Young Child with Multiple Disabilities

    This presentation will focus on the timely topic of children with multiple disabilities in addition to hearing loss, who become cochlear implant recipients. Specific areas of discussion will include solutions to challenges in assessment and intervention, need for the use of an interdisciplinary team, the research literature on the topic. The course will provide participants with resources and references.

  • Audiologists and Teachers (or Therapists) Working Together

    This session will provide participants with ideas and suggestions for collaboration with other professionals. The importance of teaming with other providers to ensure the highest quality of service to one’s clients will be discussed. A variety of service delivery models will be described as well as materials for working together.

  • Assessment for the Child with a Cochlear Implant

    This presentation will describe instruments used by Implant Centers in the areas of speech perception, and speech and language development. Case study examples will illustrate the nature of information reported by Center assessments. Recommendations for the type of evaluation tools that might be more appropriate in educational settings and that may more directly inform habilitation will also be provided.

  • Assembling a Supportive Team for a Child with a Cochlear Implant

    A child with a cochlear implant needs a team of people to properly support his or her needs at school. That team should include school-based professionals, CI clinicians, parents, child and classmates. The purpose of this seminar is to review the role of each team member and discuss how parents and others can encourage the child's support network to develop and flourish.
