Many adults with progressive hearing loss have not used a voice telephone in a long time and may become accustomed to using captions for phone usage. Teenagers—whether or not they have a hearing loss—use text messaging as their primary method of exchanging information with friends and family members. This course will provide a hands-on review of wireless telephones from the perspective of usability by the hearing impaired listener.

This session is the second in a series that deconstructs the auditory skills hierarchy and takes each level of auditory function in turn to build a complete understanding of auditory skill development. The critical level of auditory identification is examined here. Specific treatment techniques for maximizing progress through these particular levels will be discussed with ideas for targeting these skills in all situational contexts.

This one hour seminar focuses on the role of the aural rehabilitation professional on a cochlear implant team when treating adults seeking bilateral implantation. The presenter will discuss via lecture, case presentations and videos key concepts pertinent to the evaluation process, candidate selection and follow up therapy. The role of each person on the cochlear implant team will be discussed to demonstrate the importance of the team approach.

Music appreciation training for cochlear implant users is a relatively new rehabilitation focus. Recent experience has shown that specific practice techniques as well as listening to particular kinds of music can be helpful in improving perception and enjoyment of music. Research has shown that structured practice may be helpful to cochlear implant users. This seminar will review strategies that help music enjoyment for adults and older children, and introduce a music rehabilitation program that was developed specifically for cochlear implant and hearing aid users.

Our goal in educating students who are deaf and hard of hearing is to provide an environment and supports that enable them to be successful learners. How can we set students up to effectively benefit from their education? How do we meet individual student needs rather than making do with “available” services. This presentation will address the variety of students with hearing loss in our schools from those on IEPs to 504s to no services at all.

This talk will review advantages of bilateral cochlear implantation and why it should be considered. It will discuss children who would be considered a candidate for bilateral implantation and the outcomes that may be achieved. The major emphasis of the talk will focus on the development of auditory skills utilizing bilateral cochlear implants. This will include discussion of specific goals and how to incorporate the auditory development in school and at home.

The purpose of this course is to provide cochlear implant recipients and professionals with an understanding of the procedures performed by the audiologist during programming appointments. The various procedures performed during mapping sessions will be described, and the rationale for each procedure will be explained. Attendees will be given helpful hints for how to prepare for the appointment, and will also receive information regarding improving communication with their audiologist before, during and after the appointment.

This seminar will provide information on why adults should pursue some form of rehabilitation after cochlear implantation. Various listening tools will be discussed and demonstrated with specific strategies on their successful use.

The purpose of this presentation is to demonstrate that children with significant hearing loss can be bilingual, regardless of their educational landscape and how bilingual issues are integral to the audiologic management of the child. The course reviews considerations that need to be made by audiologists and other interventionists when working with families of these hearing impaired children when the home language is a language other than the majority language.

This workshop will provide information on why adults should pursue rehabilitation after cochlear implantation and the various types of rehabilitation that may be helpful. Topics reviewed will include auditory and speech therapy, music appreciation, interactive software, and other tools that can be pursued as part of a home practice program. Case studies on several adults and their rehab experiences will be shared.

It is widely accepted that any child receiving a cochlear implant must receive subsequent aural rehabilitation services in order to experience maximal benefit from the implant device. The same holds true for most adult recipients, however, more often than not, rehabilitation services are hard for them to find. Speech language pathologists and audiologists who have trained to work with children may be reluctant to apply their skills in auditory development to adult clients.

This presentation will review essential information needed to prepare high school students, with a cochlear implant, for college. Relevant laws and an array of different levels of support will be reviewed. One set of parents' perspective on working with their son's disability coordinator will be presented.

The purpose of this presentation is to provide information that will help prepare students for life after high school. Common questions and concerns about this exciting transition will be covered in this course.

Just as it is for children, rehabilitation for adults is critical to achieve one’s personal best with a cochlear implant. Auditory training can help improve outcomes in various situations including listening in quiet, using the telephone, enjoying music, and understanding speech in noise. Sound and WAY Beyond is a computer assisted speech training software package that can be used at home by adults and teens to practice their auditory skills.

Classrooms and other educational spaces are among the least friendly listening environments for children with cochlear implants. Use of assistive technology such as sound field and personal FM systems can be compromised by noise and reverberation in structured classroom settings. Also, one-on-one and small group interactions are also impeded. This presentation provides practical rationale for the benefits of appropriate acoustical environments and provides specific guidance for professionals and parents seeking improved acoustics.

Communication strategies are an important tool in the life of a cochlear implant recipient. While many people with hearing loss display a passive communication style with ineffective strategies, CI users can learn to be assertive, ask for what they need, and get it, thereby making conversation smoother, more accurate, and less frustrating, for both recipient and speaker.

This class will provide information regarding the five troubleshooting steps that can be employed when working with any Nucleus sound processor. Each one these five steps will be described for the five currently used sound processors.

This foundational course will describe how hearing works, and how technologies such as hearing aids, cochlear implants, and Baha® can help when a person has hearing loss. Audiological candidacy guidelines for Nucleus®cochlear implants and Baha will be reviewed, and the technology will be briefly described. Further, an overview of the use of assistive listening devices for both product lines will be discussed. 

This class will provide information to educational professionals and clinicians to aid them in their advisement of parents regarding the current health insurance environment for auditory osseointegrated implants (Baha) and cochlear implants. Information about the world of health insurance and how to work with payers to obtain coverage for professional services and equipment will be presented.

As the academic year draws to a close, school-based professionals find themselves writing progress reports and making recommendations for continued skill development for the next school year. This online seminar will outline guidelines for writing progress reports that give a clear description of current skill level and describe the activities that will assist the professional in writing such reports. Specific recommendations for identifying IEP objectives in the domains of audition, language development and speech production will also be covered.
