Course Description:
This course provides new cochlear implant audiologists with information on adult and pediatric candidacy guidelines, medical/surgical overview of the cochlear implant procedure; information on how to counsel a candidate/family member regarding cochlear implantation; information about the current Nucleus 5 Cochlear Implant System, including Neural Response Therapy (NRT), sound processor programming, using the Remote Assistant and troubleshooting; and information on tools to improve clinic efficiency.

Learner Outcomes:

  • Determine if a patient meets audiological candidacy criteria for a cochlear implant
  • Counsel a candidate/family regarding expectations, device features and benefits
  • Program sound processor using behavioral and/or objective methods
  • Explain how the sound processor works, including SmartSound2 technology and how to troubleshoot

Audience:
This course is intended for audiologists who are new to working with cochlear implants and have little to no experience with candidacy evaluation process, electrical stimulation, how the device works, device programming, or the follow up for recipients of cochlear implants.

This course is designed for working clinicians and is ideally taken in close proximity to working with CI patients. AuD students who participate should be entering a 4th year fellowship or CI rotation.

Continuing Education Units (CEUs):
Cochlear Americas is approved by the Continuing Education Board of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) to provide continuing education activities in speech-language pathology and audiology. This program is offered for Introductory Level; Professional area CEU's (1.7). ASHA CE Provider approval does not imply endorsement of course content, specific products, or clinical procedures.

Cochlear Americas is approved by the American Academy of Audiology to offer AAA CEUs for this activity. The program is approved for 1.7 CEUs. Academy approval of this continuing education activity does not imply endorsement of course content, specific products, or clinical procedures.

Course overview:
This 3 day course provides in-depth training on all generations of the Nucleus cochlear implant (CI) and Baha® implantable hearing systems; troubleshooting of the devices; billing, coding, and reimbursement; and practical hands-on sessions. The meeting will be highly interactive with a focus on addressing daily product usage, equipment management and reimbursement challenges. The course will be divided by CI and Baha, and participants can attend all or part of the 3-day workshop.

Learner outcomes:

  • Troubleshoot the current Nucleus Cochlear Implant Sound Processor/Baha Sound Processor and accessories
  • Counsel a candidate/candidate’s family regarding preventative maintenance of Cochlear Implant and Baha sound processors
  • Place an electronic return materials authorization (eRMA) request
  • Complete the appropriate paperwork and follow up for reimbursement requests

Intended audience:
This course is intended for Hearing Instrument Specialists, Technicians, Office Assistants, Audiology Assistants, administrative staff, or other members of an implant center who work with Nucleus cochlear implants and/or Baha, and provide support to the implant team.

Cost:
