Turn the Music On - Enhancing CI Recipients Music Experience

Mar 24 2009 - 6:00pm - 9:00pm Location:
Hilton San Diego

San Diego, CA,
United States

Cochlear implants (CI) have traditionally been designed to deliver sound signals most important to speech understanding.  However, many CI recipients successfully hear and enjoy music through their implants.  Why is that?  This seminar will explore how music is coded and perceived through normal, acoustic hearing and how it is coded through the electrical stimulation of a cochlear implant.  Understanding the technical differences in coding and perception of music through these two means will enhance participant’s knowledge of the limitations in delivering a complex musical signal through the cochlear implant.  This will set the foundation as to why musical rehabilitation and assistive devices are important to enhancing the music experience for CI recipients.  This seminar will include lecture on acoustic & electrical music coding, the latest research on music and CI’s, rehabilitation recommendations and tips, assistive listening devices that can enhance the music experience and an interactive panel of recipients and professionals who will share their music experiences and tips.
