Development of Reading and Literacy in Hearing Impaired Children - Auditory-Verbal Practice - Austin, TX

This 1-day course will provide information about the development of reading and literacy in children with hearing impairment. It will also focus on how to work on these skills through Auditory-Verbal Practice. We will address areas such as the stages of reading aloud to children who are deaf or hard of hearing, vocabulary development, oral narration, and the acquisition of phonological and phonemic awareness skills. A variety of strategies and will be demonstrated and practiced. Participants will have an opportunity to apply information via a case study approach.
Speaker Bio:
Kathryn Wilson has been a faculty member at The University of North Carolina since 2008. She is the Director of First YEARS (www.firstyears.org) program. She is a licensed and certified Speech-Language Pathologist, Teacher of the Deaf, and LSLS Certified Auditory-Verbal Therapist. Kathryn has more than 30 years of experience as an educator and therapist in public schools, private practice, home-based, and clinical settings. Prior to joining the faculty at The University of North Carolina, Kathryn directed the Resource Support Program in the Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Education Services (North Carolina). Kathryn is a former member of the Board of Directors for Auditory-Verbal International, Inc., and served as Co-chair of its Professional Education Committee. Kathryn has provided consultation and training to individuals, schools and families in many different states. She also mentors professionals pursuing certification in Auditory-Verbal Therapy.
